Kuugalak Community Centre Embodied Carbon: Upfront Emissions Assessment
This report, prepared by Mantle Climate for the Pitquhirnikkut Ilihautiniq / Kitikmeot Heritage Society, presents a comprehensive life cycle assessment of the Kuugalak Community Centre in Cambridge Bay, Nunavut. It evaluates the upfront embodied carbon emissions from construction, comparing the actual building process with both the original design and a hypothetical southern scenario in Edmonton, Alberta. The study highlights the unique challenges of building in the Arctic, including material transportation, worker travel, and site-specific incidents. It provides actionable recommendations for reducing carbon impacts in future northern projects. The findings serve as a benchmark for energy-efficient, low-carbon construction in remote communities, aiming to raise awareness about sustainable building practices in the North.
